Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy

Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity

Kuala Lumpur Overview SDG 7

Energy is undeniably one of the most significant driving forces to prepare Kuala Lumpur in coping with an electricity demand for a population of 1.7 million, and an average increment rate of 1.8% annually. Hence, renewable energy uptake and innovation in the implementation of energy-efficient buildings as well as exploring other alternative energies are crucial in Kuala Lumpur’s sustainability journey. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (KLCH) has committed to install energy-efficient and renewable energy systems in their buildings and other assets. They also imposed mandatory requirements that all future residential & commercial developments in Kuala Lumpur must utilize at least 30% of renewables on-site. Wangsa Maju Low Carbon Pilot Project is part of this initiative. Internally, KLCH has taken initiatives to build capacity of KLCH officers on energy through international organizations such as SEDA, REHDA and other agencies. Collaboration of KLCH and TNB has also begun to install renewable energy equipment and products. However, Kuala Lumpur should expect higher energy consumption as part of the city’s economic growth. There is an increase in renewable energy use however many more has the potential to be scaled up because the current use is still relatively low.

Policy and Frameworks

Current Kuala Lumpur policies and frameworks to enable the acceleration of sustainable city

Kuala Lumpur 2024

Kuala Lumpur 2040 focuses on improving the energy systems through the following strategies:-

  • PR2.1Encourage the use of renewal energy in all future development to achieve its set target
  • PR2.2Enhance energy efficiency through Smart Operations, incorporating SAIDI performance, power storage, smart grid, and district cooling systems.
  • PR2.3CImplement Waste-to-Energy facilities at strategic locations such as shopping malls and convention centers to recover energy from waste
  • PR3.1Promote low carbon buildings and sustainable urban design through resource-efficient building technology to achieve energy reduction and optimal energy utilization
  • PR3.3Implement a low carbon emission zone where zero energy buildings are encouraged

Target
