Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change and its Impacts

Kuala Lumpur’s role to combat climate change has been to integrate measures into local planning policies and strategies. The changing climate presents the single biggest threat to development, and its widespread, unprecedented effects disproportionately burden the poorest and the most vulnerable. Thus Kuala Lumpur continues to strengthen its institutional and individual capacity to effectively implement climate mitigation, adaptation to reduce impacts to the city and its community.

The city is also building resilience in responding to climate-related hazards and natural disasters. Kuala Lumpur being the largest and densely occupied city in Malaysia has pledged its commitment to reduce carbon emission intensity of per capita GDP by 45% in 2030, in comparison to emission intensity in 2005 and is targeted to become a carbon neutral city in 2050. The city has also implemented several mega projects to mitigate flash floods and alternative water resources. The KLCH and Department of Irrigation have built 27 retention ponds across the city to mitigate flash flood occurrence during heavy downfalls to reduce impact of floods. The excess water is captured and stored as an alternative water resource during drought season. Storm water Management and Road Tunnel or SMART Tunnel is Kuala Lumpur’s pivotal project to reduce the city’s floods.
