Kuala Lumpur being a landlocked city, far from coastal access and exposure still has the responsibility to reduce marine pollution of all kinds. In particular through discharge of sewage, industrial effect and other waste water and solid waste into rivers that reach coastal waterways and the ocean that contributes directly to achieve a healthy and productive marine resource.
Kuala Lumpur Overview SDG 14
The city of Kuala Lumpur has installed a total of 368 Gross Pollutant Traps (GTP) whereby 362 were installed by the Department of Drainage (DID) and 6 by KLCH. Throughout the river run there has also been 32 log booms installed, 18 log booms by DID and 1 by KLCH, whereby these traps and log booms are placed in various drainage sites across Kuala Lumpur. Several proactive actions have been taken to alleviate the effects of plastic leakages and open dumping of waste, industrial, commercial as well as community irresponsible dumping into our river waterways. Heavy fines are imposed when culprits are identified.
